Hiring a photographer is one of those decisions that really matters — these are the images you'll keep for a lifetime, so it's worth choosing well. But if you've never booked a photographer before, it can be hard to know what to look for. Here's a straightforward guide to help you find the right fit, with the key questions worth asking before you commit.
1. Look at full galleries, not just highlights
Anyone can show off a handful of stunning shots. What you really want to see is a complete gallery from start to finish — a whole wedding, a full family session — so you know the quality is consistent throughout, not just in the best few frames.
2. Make sure you love their style
Photography styles vary enormously — bright and airy, dark and moody, classic and posed, relaxed and candid. There's no "right" style, only the one that feels like you. Spend time looking at a photographer's work and ask yourself whether you'd be happy with your own memories captured that way.
3. Meet them (even virtually)
You'll be spending real time with your photographer, sometimes during emotional or vulnerable moments. It matters that you click with them and feel at ease. A quick chat or call before booking tells you a lot about whether you'll feel comfortable in front of their lens.
4. Understand exactly what you're getting
Packages differ, so be clear on the details before you book. It's worth confirming things like:
• How long is the session or coverage?
• How many edited images will you receive?
• Are prints, albums or wall art included, or extra?
• When and how will you get your photos?
• Is there a second photographer (especially important for weddings)?
5. Questions worth asking before you book
A good photographer will welcome these:
• Have you shot at my venue / location before? Local knowledge is invaluable.
• What happens if you're ill on the day? Reputable photographers have a backup plan.
• How long until we see our photos? Turnaround times vary a lot.
• Do you have insurance? Many venues now require it.
• Can we see a recent full gallery? As above — consistency is everything.
6. Read reviews and recommendations
Word of mouth is powerful. Look at reviews, ask friends and family, and pay attention to how a photographer is described — were they calm, organised, easy to work with? Those qualities matter as much as the photos themselves.
7. Think about value, not just price
The cheapest option can become expensive if you're disappointed with images you can never recreate. Equally, the priciest isn't automatically the best. Look for the photographer who offers the right quality, style and experience for your budget — that's where real value lies.
8. Trust your instinct
After you've done your research, go with your gut. The photographer who makes you feel relaxed, understood and excited about your photos is almost always the right choice.
