"What should we wear?" is the question we hear most often once a session is booked — and it's a good one, because the right outfits really do help you look and feel your best in your photos. The good news is there's no need to overthink it. Here are our simple, time-tested tips to help you put together a look you'll love.
Coordinate, don't match
The biggest tip of all: aim to coordinate rather than match. Everyone in identical outfits can look a little dated and stiff. Instead, choose a colour palette — say, soft neutrals with a pop of one accent colour — and let each person wear something within it. The result feels natural, stylish and cohesive.

Pick two or three complementary colours and build everyone's outfits around them. Some palettes that always work beautifully:
• Soft neutrals — creams, beiges, soft greys and whites
• Earthy tones — sage, rust, mustard and warm browns
• Cool blues and denims with a touch of white
• Muted pastels for a soft, gentle feel
Keep patterns simple
A little texture and pattern adds interest, but large logos, busy prints and bold stripes tend to pull the eye away from faces. If one person wears a subtle pattern, balance it with plainer outfits on everyone else.
Dress for comfort
You'll look your best when you feel relaxed, so choose clothes you're comfortable in and that fit well. This matters most for children — a comfortable child is a happy, cooperative one. Avoid anything brand new and unworn, which can feel stiff or fussy on the day.
Think about the setting and season
• Beach or coast (Bispham, Lytham, St Annes): flowing fabrics that move beautifully in the breeze look gorgeous; bring a layer, as it can be windy.
• Parks and gardens (Stanley Park, Fairhaven): earthy and natural tones sit beautifully against greenery.
• Studio: clean, simple colours keep all the focus on you.
• Winter: lovely chunky knits and layers; summer: light, airy fabrics.
Add a few finishing touches
Simple accessories — a scarf, a hat, delicate jewellery — can add personality without overwhelming the look. Just keep it understated so the focus stays on your faces and your connection.
A few things to avoid
• Neon colours, which can cast a glow onto skin
• Big, distracting logos and slogans
• Everyone in the exact same outfit
• Brand new shoes that pinch (especially for outdoor walking shots!)
Most importantly — feel like you
At the end of the day, the best outfit is one that feels true to you and your family. Don't feel you have to dress up as someone you're not. When you feel comfortable and yourself, it shows in the photos — and that's what makes them special.
